Sample Traditional Greek Christmas Food on your Corfu Holidays

by Steve Alexander

Why not escape to Greece for an alternative Christmas feast if you're looking for a more adventurous take on Christmas dinner this year. During the chilly season, tourists on Corfu holidays are privy to a surprising array of unusual Christmas dishes.

A bowl of chicken and rice soup kicks off every Christmas in Greece. Whether you opt for Rhodes holidays or Athens city breaks, this traditional soup is one unmissable culinary experience that you can enjoy wherever you choose to stay.

The main course of roast pork is another deeply rooted Greek food tradition. Pork remains a popular Christmas option among Greeks and it was originally the meat of choice because winter is traditionally the slaughtering season for hogs. Accompanied by a selection of chopped winter salads, it is served alongside a host of other mains, such as stuffed lamb and poultry dishes.

To finish comes a fantastic array of pastries and sweets, all rich, satisfyingly sugary and inevitably moreish. While Greeks traditionally stick to relatively fat-free sesame baklava in the run up to Christmas, once the festive season is in full swing the sugary pastries come out in full force. Melomakarona, the ubiquitous Christmas treat, are much-loved seasonal pastries and rich and crumbly kourabiethes are another festive favourite.

Just like the rest of the country during the Christmas period, Crete holidays are just as centred on sweet indulgences. Flavoured with cinnamon, cloves and orange and moulded into thick rings, koulourakia christouyennon is a type of sweet biscuit covered in sesame seeds and is just one of the many unique Cretan Christmas specialities.

The christopsomo is a walnut-studded bread that brings good luck to the household and completes any Christmas table in Greece. Decorated with a stylised cross, the bread is made using only the finest ingredients before being shaped into a circular loaf.
