The Australian War Memorial is one of Australia's most significant memorials. It is found in Canberra, Australia's main city which is an easy drive from Sydney, especially if you're travelling with Campervan Hire Australia. Canberra has a few notable places to go to, however if you are enthusiastic about important memorials, the Australian War Commemorative is well worth a visit.

It's an extensive state memorial which was opened in 1941 and represents all members of all armed services who've died for the Commonwealth of Australia, while taking part in it's wars. It covers an extensive area and has three key areas. There's a Commemorative Area (shrine), Memorial galleries (museum) and Research Centre. There is also a Sculpture Garden outside.

The War Records Section had it's origins in the WW1 Australian military unit which was answerable for collecting the records in relation to that war. It was only another step to gather express items as well protecting both records and artifacts. The collection finally grew to incorporate 25 thousand records, photos and other items. This collection became the Australian War Memorial in 1919.

The Commemorative Area contains the Hall of Memory which encompasses the Roll of Honour of one hundred and two Australians who've died in war. There's a bronze plaque in remembrance of each individual Australian who has turned tits up in Australia's service going back to the Second Boer War, the English Sudanese Expedition and the Fighter Rebellion.

Australia was concerned in these older conflicts due it's allegiance to the British Empire. There's a lot to see at the Australian War Commemorative and looking thru the old records is interesting, especially if you've got an active interest war souvenirs, as well as the relationship between the personal and the political vis the armed conflicts Australia has been involved in.
